Mark Bridges Talks Maestro
Screen fustian : You ’ve worked in a wide of the mark variety of genres , so what drew you toMaestroand made you want to get involved in the projection ?
Mark Bridges : It ’s not often that you get to illustrate the better part of well - roll in the hay people ’s lives and chart their grade through 40 geezerhood . I was able to contrive for the 40s , for the 50s , late 60s , much of the 70s , and even into the 80s . That chance does n’t come by well . That was really fun . Bradley ’s a corking cat to work with . He ’s always enthusiastic and passionate and a real gentleman . And I was useable . We had start work together on camera psychometric test and thing in the summertime of 2020 , and I just detain on for the entire labor . It was majuscule merriment .
verbalise of Bradley Cooper , how was working with him as both the managing director and star of the motion picture ?

Mark Bridges : Bradley and I knew each other and had spring a bond paper of combine over a film called Silver Linings Playbook . Then we were working together on Licorice Pizza and that ’s when the tv camera trial run started . We ’d already create a level of trust mould together and a liberty during Silver Linings Playbook .
Working as actor and designer again , you take that trust and level of coaction over to him as a theater director , which I always feel like my caper is to create and fulfill the vision of my director . It was n’t a huge leap from progress to sure that my actor is able to do what he require to do , then take it one footstep further and ensure my music director has his sight execute .
How much did you experience about Leonard and Felicia before the project ? Were you a rooter of their study ?

Maestro is a biographical drama about the famous composer Leonard Bernstein. Bradley Cooper stars as Leonard Bernstein and also wrote and directed the film. The movie chronicles Bernstein’s life from 1946, when he met Felicia Montealegre, through his two engagements and three children. Maya Hawke, Carey Mulligan, Sarah Silverman, and Matt Bomer star alongside Cooper.
Mark Bridges : I had the bare cognition of Leonard . I get laid of his composition , mostly because they were sort of well known films . On the Town I get it on was his work . I know West Side Story . As far as the Indiana and outs , where you derive from , his humble beginning , his smashing debut at age 25 in Carnegie Hall , and then , of course , their love narrative I roll in the hay nothing about .
Now , I defy say , I ’m a routine of an expert after illustrating their life and doing visual enquiry , reading biographies , put my hands on anything I could regarding that couple and their lives , and they ’re quite fascinating . All the ups and down and ins and outs and the endure love that was there to the very ending .
How much did you wait back at photo of Leonard and Felicia versus the time catamenia in oecumenical ?

Mark Bridges : Whether I ’m doing The Fabelmans for Steven Spielberg , or whether I ’m doing this film , there ’s always a level of research . You endeavor to look visually to interpret who these people are and how they present themselves to the cosmos . There are a mountain of clues in what people choose to wear , so I love that . We had a plenty of scenes that had background players . We had a full interview for Carnegie Hall , we had an audience for a Broadway show in 1946 , and we had an audience for the MASS premiere at Kennedy Center in 1971 . I use films from that period . The mid 40s was the treasure trove of research for what audiences wait like .
The mores of the clock time and wearing apparel codification of the clip and what you wore . Everything was dead matched , and black link was required for the evening . By the time we get to the 80s , it ’s a very unlike world , and a very more relaxed sense of dress computer code . I lie with showing that . I would go through their lives , and see where they are , and then refer back to the handwriting and think about how we could possibly honour them and their personal style in each of the scenes . How to apply the clothes to secernate the write up .
Was there a specific outfit of theirs that you require to revive ?

Mark bridge : Many actually . We were able to apply one of Felicia ’s apparel for the nation house view . That was great energy give one of her literal garments that she endure at her land house on Carey . There ’s a striped Gallic bluejacket shirt with a kerchief that Lenny wears in the mid 70s . He has a beard at the same sentence and that was a very myopic menstruum of his life-time when there was a bit of domestic turmoil for them . There ’s a photograph of him wearing this conducting and rehearsing with an orchestra .
And then I see in the script that we have a scene where he ’s rehearse with the orchestra during this period when he has a beard . The events are n’t the same , but that moment in his biography , and what he is saying , what ’s in the script , it felt like that pick taken from research in his literal life put together with the written Word of God that Bradley and Josh did , made for a very brawny aspect . So that ’s how I go through it — culling the real enquiry and applying it to the drama .
There are definitely scenes with some intense choreography . Is it a challenge to produce costumes that are authentic but also allow for the doer the exemption to move around in that electrical capacity ?

Mark Bridges : It was just one of the many thing that I looked forward to getting correctly in the process of designing . Luckily , today , we have fabrics that they did n’t have in the 40 . They have a little stretch in them , but we also explore how those original dance costumes and Broadway show costume were created but just threw in that lilliputian modern moment of stretch for them so that they correspond a certain direction , but they still moved and acted the way that the original did . That was a challenge and fun . We work back a couple of clock time to get the fit right on Bradley and to ensure he could do everything he require to do .
How much does the film being in pitch-black and snowy strike the costume choices ? Would you have chosen the same press if it was all in color ?
Mark Bridges : With that particular dance successiveness , I felt like the contour were potent enough to go secernate the story for that , but there is definite planning and testing along the way of life to make indisputable we ’re cause the right decisions as far as values or texture . It ’s very methodical . It does n’t really happen by stroke . I get a lot of experience from the film that I designed holler The Artist , which was all in shameful and blanched . I learned some things there that I was able to add . Matty and Bradley committed completely to factual black - and - bloodless moving picture , so we were able to do some tests and check that we were on the right caterpillar track before pip .
Is there a costume that stands out to you , either because it was difficult to make or was an straightaway fit ?
Mark Bridges : I remember working very hard on make the dress that we first see Felicia in . It ’s a 40s dress . We recreated a vintage dress that we discover , had a raw dress create , did astragal on it , and made a matching stole with the same beading on it . Gloves , we made the clutch pocketbook that she bear , made sure the shoes were the same value as the apparel . I pass a lot of clip on that , and I was very felicitous how it flex out . It ’s an interesting garment .
We actually had a vintage adaptation we used on Carey ’s photographic camera mental testing two class before shooting . It just always solve . It always work , and it was worthwhile — us make a raw one for the film . That ’s probably my dearie , because we did so much to make it perfect and to make their first scenes together magical . There ’s always a little act of sparkle there . Whether it ’s Lenny ’s decimal point of thought or the looker ’s point of sentiment , there ’s a twinkle there , and I ’m very happy with how it play .
Do you have any upcoming projects that you ’re looking ahead to work on ?
Mark Bridges : Yes . I am go bad to do my fourth collaboration with director Paul Greengrass . I love his work . I love working with him . We are go to do a more contemporary art object . The last piece that we turn on together was News of the World , which was set in 1870 , and now we ’re doing a little more contemporaneous objet d’art . queerly enough , it involve the same amount of inquiry , the same amount of cull real image and using them for dramatic purpose . He ’s another marvellous filmmaker . I ’m very activated about that and to be up and hunt again after a rather inactive year last year in our business concern .
