" We in conclusion flummox to a gunpoint where , we ’d try dissimilar thing , and I just remember at last aver , ' How about this one ? ' and we ’d try it , and I said , ' John , I intend this comes back to square one . I think that ’s what it does . ' The only matter I could do was end up it with , ' Why do n’t we just pose here for a while and see what happens . ' It worked . It was the thing that it called for . It ’s play to pick up people talk about that one , I must say , that ’s a fun one . "

Why The Thing’s Ambiguous Ending Works So Well
While ambiguous end can be frustrative if not handled well , The matter ’s culmination setting has play in the photographic film ’s favor . By not revealing whetherMacReady or Childs is the titular Thing , debates and theories have continued for tenner . All of this has aid the film stand the test of clock time and stay an interesting subject of discussion .
The " eye gleam theory " posit that the extraterrestrial being can be identified by the want of a subtle glint in the eye that the human characters all have . Carpenter late debunked this theory , however .
The ending , of course , also play into one of the film ’s cardinal themes about paranoia . The Thingends with MacReady and Childs not trusting each other , and each homo suspects the other of being the form - shift alien . After what they ’ve each witnessed , it ’s reasonable to simulate that there ’s nothing that will convince either one of the other ’s indistinguishability . One specially dour and dead satisfactory interpretation of the film ’s concluding moments is that neither human being is the exotic , and both will freeze to end because the lack of trust will prevent them from work together .
