Summary

Screen Rantinterviewed Ncuti Gatwa about playing the Fifteenth Doctor in theDoctor Whospecials " The Giggle"and " The Church on Ruby Road . " He explained how he emulated sure mannerisms of Tennant while making The Doctor his own by rivet on his more prankish side . Gatwa also broke down the dynamic between The Doctor and Ruby , teased a big mystery surrounding Ruby in the first season , and explained why working with Sir Humphrey Davy was what seal his need to meet The Doctor .

Screen Rant : I do it your foundation , and the Christmas special is fantastic !
Ncuti Gatwa : Oh , thank you so much . Thank you .
You got to work with David Tennant in " The Giggle " . Did you want to incorporate any aspects of his performance or any other past Doctors into your portrayal of the character ?
Ncuti Gatwa : Yes , all of them . And then I realized that my brain was go to blow up , but I attempt to do that . I had this whole theory of being like , Right , I ’m going to take something from every individual Doctor , and I ’ll line up my own affair , and it ’ll all fit . But I was like , you just have to do you Ncuti , you just have to do you . But with David , yes , there were a little aspect of his performance and the intricacies of his animalism . I wanted to try just the tiny , tiniest percentage , try and emulate .
Because 15 has literally just pop out his shoulder . So he ’s being birthed from this Doctor in a style that we have n’t go out before . And so there were little things that I wanted to continue on with , surely just for Christmas , sure as shooting . And then he ’ll find a piece more of his own physicality as he go on . Because he has to get used to that consistence very quickly . He does n’t have that Greco-Roman sequence where he ’s stress to figure out his new body and is slightly like half - drunk sort of affair .
He arrives , and there ’s a God villain , a villain God in front of him and , also 14 is still here . masses are [ here ] , also this bi - genesis . Lots of things are decease on at the moment , so he has to get his animal foot very , very quickly . And so yeah , to help me with that , I was like , I ’m going to steal a little number of what David ’s doing . I feel like it ’ll makes sense .
The latest Doctor Who series introduces the Fifteenth Doctor, joined by new companion Ruby Sunday.
On the flip side , what did you want to describe into with the Doctor to make this interpretation your own ?
Ncuti Gatwa : I think probably mischief , but it ’s a tough question to answer because The Doctor , every Doctor has be so different . human beings and worlds and worlds apart , and yet you’re able to not deny that there ’s a through line with the actors that played this office and how they played them . There ’s something remarkably The Doctor about them , and yet they ’re all worlds apart .
And so , in their own way , everyone has always been a lover of mischief , curious to the point of develop themselves into rascality and having to get themselves out . Just being commove by the world , concerned , and queer about the human beings . So they ’ve all been a bit mischievous , but I was like mischief and curio are maybe the thing that I want to try and concentrate on .
Can you talk to me a little bit about form with Millie Gibson to create the dynamic between Ruby and the Doctor and how she stands out from other companions we ’ve see ?
Ncuti Gatwa : Yeah , I think it was Millie that kind of finalized what my Doctor would be . She come up into the audition , and I instantly think to myself , Oh , we would ’ve gotten in trouble at shoal . We would ’ve been in the detention schoolroom together at shoal and still cackling . We ’re the two Thomas Kyd that the instructor said something cockamamie and say , Stop laughing , and you just ca n’t help yourself but keep [ laughing ] . That ’s the resonance . And I consider the casting of Ruby Sunday and seeing Ruby Sunday in the playscript , that bore into me as to what Doctor of the Church I would be .
And I think that Ruby Sunday , dissimilar from the other fellow traveler … they’re all the eyes of the consultation , and they are the audience , but they ’re also who The Doctor … The Doctor ’s been around forever and seen lot of things . And so they are able to just see the creation through the eyes of the companion . It ’s a really important little moral force .
Specifically about Ruby , I think what makes her different is just the whodunit that ’s fence her . There ’s a mystery that surrounds her that The Doctor wants to get to the bottom of . And we see the startle of that in " The Church on Ruby Road " , and then that enigma continues throughout time of year one . That ’s all I can say .
I love that teaser . That ’s awesome .
Ncuti Gatwa : No , I know . Do n’t get me in trouble . I ’m so bad at spoilers . My team is looking at me like I ’ve got a gun to your heading if you say anything else .
Can you speak to me about collaborating with Russell T. Davies who was the one that revived the series nearly 20 years ago ?
Ncuti Gatwa : The part itself is an accolade to take on , dead and the show is beloved to all the UK and around the world . But Russell ’s writing was what sealed the eyelid of like , I have to get this job . I want to process with this writer . As an doer , I need to process with this [ writer ] . This author is olympian , he ’s going to dispute me , and I feel like I ’m going to become a cleverer individual after working with him . I feel like I ’m going to get smarter , and I experience like I ’m go to be a better player .
And I also just want to say those words , and I require to channel those emotions , and I just desire to function with this author . And so , it ’s been great working with him . It ’s not too unalike to when I used to do Shakespeare back in dramatic art . The text is that , I want to practice the Scripture fat . It ’s full . It ’s full of everything . dark , legerity , joy , humor , and gross nuisance . It is just so fatly full of everything . I was just like , I have to work with this writer . And so , thank God , I am .
When you were function with David Tennant , did he kind of pass on any words of wisdom to you about dally the Doctor or any of the other retiring doctor , did they kind of give you any advice on taking on this part ?
Ncuti Gatwa : Certainly not with playing the part , but they told me to delight it . To enjoy it . This is the maddest time of my life . It ’s going to be the unrestrained time of my aliveness . It ’s going to be the biggest rollercoaster of my life , but it ’s going to be the best metre as well . And so , throughout all the madness , all the chaos , and the prime in the sake in you and all that kind of stuff and nonsense .
Just remember , at the core of it , it ’s fun . This is a very fun show , and it ’s important to have fun with it . And I now find out to take that advice on add-in . Season one I could n’t quite because I just felt I want to get it proper . I was like , I have to get this right , and I have to be perfect ! But now those nerves are settle , and now I just enjoy it .
