Screen Rant : Barbieis my favorite film of the year . It is fantastic and a fantastic accomplishment . If you would ’ve tell me aBarbiemovie has such a deep content , I would ’ve said , You ’re crazy . But the cinema is grotesque , and it dead does . You startle on this film six month before shooting started . During that sentence , you did extensive research . Can you lecture about that a niggling bit ?
Ivana Primorac : perfectly . Once all of us came together , all of us meaning HODs , people from unlike department , costume , production plan , camera , we all start stimulate , if I call back correctly , were Tuesday Zoom meetings with Greta , who was somewhere shooting another movie , and we were all doing unlike things , and we would meet on Zoom to discuss what we were about to have to create . And we ’ve all read only the first draft of the script that only got better with time , but it was mind float from the beginning .
And it was fun because we all talk about what we think it needed to be , but very quickly we decided , we clear that we do n’t fuck what it need to be and we do n’t have , with all of our compound experience , we did n’t really have much to reap back on aside from hard work and render to research it as much as possible .

So we discussed what we did n’t retrieve it should be , and we put some parameters of what we think it should be . And that was mainly ordered series , the scale of Barbie world . Barbie Land was obviously very , very important , and Sarah Greenwood led the way with that . And I retrieve that was made us all realize that that ’s what we should latch onto and make this world , which is slenderly unlike from ours .
Absolutely . Now , set me if I ’m wrong , but originally you wanted to go with the more fantastical plastic look . What inspired that alteration to make the feeling more base ?
Ivana Primorac : Well , it was because we had time . I just thought we got to test and make , because we had to have Barbie Land , Barbie world , and people in Barbie Land await different from LA that we were move to total and shoot in . And LA is a world in which everything get going and people are unbelievably stylish , up to date with everything . So one of the idea was to go and replicate the dull quality to people .

So we did , literally I made a custom - made torso makeup that sort of had that plasticy looking and sheen and I prototyped a lot of pilus that was a mixture of charge plate and raw roughage and all sorts of different ideas came into playing period . And the outcome was very quickly we realized that in every child ’s creative thinker , Barbie is the most beautiful thing in the worldly concern . So create our histrion into something that ’s not very pleasing and plasticy is not what you think when you play with a Barbie dame . You opine it to be amazing at everything she can do , and you do n’t see the plug in her hair when you ’re playing with her .
You just think that her hairsbreadth is the most unbelievable thing in the earth . So the scale come into fun . The hair had to be the longest , wide of the mark than every Barbie ’s shoulders , delicious , unbelievable , beautiful in every colour , but it had to represent the best of everyone . Now , piggybacking off of that , Barbiedoes represent each person in the room that it ’s a gross version of each soul . Can you talk over how you translated that to the hair and makeup that we see in the photographic film ?

Ivana Primorac : Well , then it became very , very obvious that we had to outfit and create every persona separately . There were no two Barbies that were ever the same . There were no two Kens that were the same , and there was no formula . The only formula was , as I say , the scale and the size of Barbie ’s hair , but it had to be natural , could n’t resemble any period , like the ' 60s . So we had to create custom made piece for everyone .
And the skin tones , all the body makeup had to be custom - made , so it made a perfection of everyone ’s skin tone rather than making people ’s tegument spirit match . Enhancing everyone ’s individual dish became very , very significant . And of course , that is the substance of the film as well . She goes on her personal process of discovery , self - discovery .
I want to talk about body makeup just a small turn because you and your squad created it specifically for this flick to make Barbie and Ken reckon just correct . And we ’re talking articulatio genus , elbow , feet , and fingernails . Can you talk to me about grow that body make-up and its usage ?

Ivana Primorac : Yeah , absolutely . And kind of behind the ear , when you ’re doing a setting with someone , and you ’re bourgeon closeups , you see people ’s necks and under their Kuki . And that perfection is something that ’s different from what ’s beautiful in the real world . So we developed all form of dissimilar formulas , and we had different factories manufacture it for us . But then the costumes were all pastel and beautiful , and there was a lot of light and sunlight on readiness , there was a passel of high temperature .
So we had to then make the organic structure makeup waterproof and also not transferable onto clothes . So then came in another bed of surety there when our squad in the factory that made it for us , and it had to be made in as many color as they were cast . So for all the background , we kind of had eight main colors that we could blend in and match to all the dancers , but everyone had to be matched dead to their own tone .
And I recall that ’s what was unbelievable about it because when we first started develop the film , we did n’t really retrieve that ’s what we ’re plump to end up . And that very clearly was the subject matter , the realisation that everyone ’s ripe version of themselves is the most beautiful rather than making anyone look like anyone else .

When working with body makeup , do the actors have a body forethought regime that they have to kind of do ?
Ivana Primorac : Yeah , they did . I have in mind , we had the whole little factory of the process . Every Barbie and every Ken had their own team , so we did a whole exfoliating thing . We did the facials , we did all of the upkeep and then slather everyone in their body makeup that sort of stayed on . And then we would shine it up . And then we ’d do all the oils and the prep , so it looked sort of natural and did n’t crack around the articulatio genus and the heels , and then we ’d do the constitution and the hair on top of that . So everyone had a team of around two to four citizenry complete their process every day .
What are some lessons or technique that you guy used onBarbiethat you would use with any other project you work on after ?

Ivana Primorac : Well , this is all so new in its advance , but I think what I would always use is what was amazing is that you may approach every task in a different way and find out what ’s in force for it . I think that was very pleasurable to happen upon that none of us have done a movie like this before , but yet we embrace it and found a way to do it . So yeah , that ’s definitely a lot of research and a lot of making things custom made for each person .
There were brow being made , there eyelashes being made . There ’s lots of hair’s-breadth being made . Everyone had manicure and pedicure , and finding the technicians and the right people to make the factory that we made that service , the filming was the most fun . And I think I would take that with me every time , kind of try and help the whole mental process for each unlike project .
Margot Robbie has so many unlike looks in the photographic film that are all so different and unique . Which one was your favourite and which one was the most hard ?

Ivana Primorac : Well , the most difficult process was discovering how many she would have to have . At one point , we kind of decide that she would have I knew about two or three because there were referenced very to a great extent by Greta and her influences and films that she desire to pay homage to . And then I retrieve sitting on a sofa with Jacqueline Durran , a costume designer , and Margot going through the playscript , and on the spur of the moment there were 30 more change .
And then it was like , so she needs to have different hair going to bed and different hair when she wakes up . And then the three changes in a twenty-four hour period . And that became a thing about Barbie , is that she does n’t make sense . She has to have as many rig in one day as possible and also as much dissimilar hair . So it became very daunting how to … and we never stopped fitting all the elbow room through the photographic film . And interesting thing was that every time a novel turnout would come along , we ’d think , oh my God , that ’s my dearie . That is my favourite .
And then another one would do along and go , no , no , no , this is my favorite . So there were so many , like in the montage of the transport collage when they go into the real world and back , there ’s so many outfits there that I really lie with , did n’t get immense amount of CRT screen time . And some of them are really , really slow like , like special farseeing tomentum and the little bandana in the campsite , cycle through the field of blossom . And there were luck and great deal of trivial vignette that I require to see more of .

But I think what I love the most is the pink turnout and the fluorescent outfit because they were so hard to find because as we said before , everything ’s potential in LA and if you go down to the beach , you see some extraordinary citizenry . So we had to make our Barbie and Ken look different , and that took some meet and doing , and all the hair was differently made for that sequence . And I think it was in the death very successful .
I have an eight - class - one-time daughter , so when Weird Barbie was on the scene , I know just what that look like . Kate McKinnon say a lot hold out into her expression . Can you talk about working with Kate to achieve the look of Weird Barbie and the idea about the scribbles on the boldness ?
Ivana Primorac : Yeah . I mean , I had the pleasure of working with Kate before , and so I knew how much she puts into the process and nothing ’s ever impossible . She comes from the world where transformation is part of the operation . So we sat down and we discuss what it should be like and what it should be . And Greta had some incredible playfulness descriptions of what it should be as well . But every time we adjudicate to realise that , her look became something we ’ve already seen before . So it was a bit too cheesy or it was a second too tan girl .
It was a bit something that we ’ve seen before . So the original written line was that she is a Barbie that ’s been play too hard with , and that kind of grasped that mind , and it had to be haphazard , hacked of fuzz , two dissimilar variety of hair . And then of row it had to be then every girl would kind of paint the Barbies to look beautiful and then over paint her . And she would become utterly hideous to you . And then you ’d chuck her across the way into the toy basket where she lands in her splits .
And that is so true , and Greta put that in the handwriting , which was amazing . Once we were developing , so once we find the general condition and then the costume was have anatomy , it just was n’t quite there in a most wide-eyed affair . And so in the end , Kate and I drew on each other ’s faces . It was literally we had to throw away all the knowledge of makeup and tomentum and try and recreate the dewy-eyed hand in the Sharpie case of lineament of what we were using . And of a sudden it was there . And it really take a slew to discover that character with Kate . But I ’m just so thrilled with it because it did finally looked like a Barbie that was being played with too much .
Yeah , that was a reliable collaboration for sure . Barbie ’s been around for 70 geezerhood , what did Barbie mean to you growing up and what does Barbie mean to you now after work on the film ?
Ivana Primorac : Well , I bonk Barbies . I had loads and load of Barbies . My grandmother made dress for Barbies because I could n’t really buy all the bought Barbie sets and everything . So it was huge in my living . And when I heard that , Gretchen , I acknowledge I ’ve write this amazing script , I remember , I marvel what it would be like . I wonder what this storey could be like , what could it be ?
And then once reading it , I cogitate , I mean , I ’ve never ever could think that there could be a film that ’s more raw , relevant about man , about the self - discovery and that it ’s okay , you are enough and every individual is enough . And as a char , as a godmother to girls and boys , I believe it ’s a really tender , terrific content and I was so proud to be a part of it .
