9"New Earth"

Doctor Whoseason 2, episode 1

This was the first steady time of year episode for the Tenth Doctor ( David Tennant ) , who had been introduced in the 2005 vacation special , " The Christmas Invasion . " While Tennant received a magnificent response for that debut , " New Earth " is often overlooked . This is surprising , consideringit sees the payoff of the villain Cassandra ( Zoë Wanamaker ) and the Face of Boe , and it ’s the first time that looker truly see the kind of Doctor that the new embodiment will be . " New Earth " is a gravid adventure and prove thatthe Doctor and Rose ’s relationshipisn’t affect too much by the Time Lord ’s regeneration .

8"42"

Doctor Whoseason 3, episode 7

A fantastically fast - paced episode , " 42 " is still often draw a blank about despite being vivid and filled with danger . This may be becausethere are quite a few supporting characters who have minor role , which makes it difficult to follow at metre . However , " 42 " is a splendid episode for Martha Jones ( Freema Aygeman ) and understand her at her stiff . While it is n’t one ofDoctor Who ’s respectable episodesoverall , it ’s a staple in Martha and the medico ’s kinship . Her actions in " 42 " lead to the Time Lord inviting her to be a lasting fellow member of Team TARDIS , and without it , season 3 would be very dissimilar .

7"The Sontaran Stratagem" & “The Poison Sky”

Doctor Whoseason 4, episodes 4 & 5

" The Sontaran Stratagem " and " The Poison Sky " make up one ofDoctor Whoseason 4 ’s many two - part stories , and it ’s a jam - packed adventure that is unhappily often draw a blank about . These episodes see Martha reunite with the Doctor and introduced to Donna ( Catherine Tate ) for a great Earth - found storyline . It pretend sense that these installment are look out over , specially asthe two other two - parters in season 4 are so strong , but it is swell to see the Doctor ’s acquaintance interact with one another in such a domesticated way .

6"Planet Of The Dead"

Doctor Who2009 special

Between season 4 and 5 , and to strike out the end of David Tennant ’s tenure as the Doctor , Doctor Whoaired five specials between Christmas 2008 and the start of 2010 . The minute of these special , " Planet of the Dead , " introduces one - clock time companion Lady Christina de Souza ( Michelle Ryan ) and UNIT scientific advisor Malcolm Taylor ( Lee Evans ) . This sequence may befrequently forgotten because of its lack of recurring characters and minimum impact on the large tale arcfor these special .

5"Night Terrors"

Doctor Whoseason 6, episode 9

Doctor Whoseason 6 sees one of the show ’s biggest news report arcs in the show ’s history : the reveal of the identity of River Song ( Alex Kingston ) . Therefore , it ’s no surprise that " Night Terrors " became an unnoted episode , asit ’s one of few in that season that does n’t focus on the overarching narration . Whileits creepy-crawly and vivid plot of land makes the instalment a great watch , the endure - alone history does n’t meet the same standards as the rest of the season . However , it does have a bright Edgar Albert Guest star functioning from Daniel Mays , and the episode also has some very sweet father - son moment .

Dr. Who has a history of rifle " timey - wimey , " but River Song is the ultimate object lesson - here ’s her complete timeline in chronological viewing order .

4"The Doctor, The Widow And The Wardrobe"

Doctor Who2011 Christmas special

It ’s quite ambitious forDoctor Whoto try and outdo itself twelvemonth after year with a holiday special . unluckily , not all of them hit the German mark . " The Doctor , the Widow and the Wardrobe " is at least interesting patch - wise , as the Eleventh Doctor ( Matt Smith ) has active companions in Amy ( Karen Gillan ) and Rory ( Arthur Darvill ) , but they only look in the terminal moments . or else , the primary fellow role is filled by the widow woman Madge Arwell ( Claire Skinner ) , a character never watch nor mentioned again . This special does n’t add anything toDoctor Who ’s on-going traditional knowledge , but as an single sequence , it ’s a great and wholesome kinsfolk narration .

3"Hide"

Doctor Whoseason 7, episode 9

Clara Oswald ( Jenna Coleman ) is one of the Doctor ’s long - draw companions in the modern earned run average , but one of her earlier episodes , " Hide , " alas flies under the radar . Clara only feature in 11 episode opposite the Eleventh Doctor , before his re-formation into the Twelfth ( Peter Capaldi ) , so it ’s a disgrace that " Hide " is often missed . While , at a coup d’oeil , it seems to be a filler episode , it also establishes some authoritative details go into the time of year 7 story electric discharge . This sequence sees a wad of back - and - forth in a sac universe , which makes it hard to follow at time , but it has some beautiful cinematography , especially in the woodland scene .

2"The Return Of Doctor Mysterio"

Doctor Who2016 Christmas special

" The Return of Doctor Mysterio " stands out amongDoctor WhoChristmas specials because it does n’t sense particularly festive , but the construct would have worked brilliantly for a stand - alone , mid - season episode . The storyline focuses intemperately on a " superhero , " which lead to manySupermanreferences , and it is also the only social function in which Nardole ( Matt Lucas ) is the sole fellow traveler , as well as being his first story as a permanent addition to the show . While Peter Capaldi ’s execution , as usual , is very strong in " The Return of Doctor Mysterio,“it proves that a lack of a developed , well - established companion can greatly involve the winner of an episode .

1"Empress Of Mars”

Doctor Whoseason 10, episode 9

While " Empress of Mars " sees the return of the Ice warrior , their 2d appearance since the show ’s 2005 reboot , it ’s an episode that often gets forgotten . It does n’t offer an interesting format , as it ’s not often thatDoctor Whovisits an foreign planet in the past . It ’s possible that " Empress of Mars " is lost to time because , despite her being with the Doctor on Mars , Bill ( Pearl Mackie ) is n’t really used much . Like mostDoctor Whoepisodes , it still has plenty of drama and humor , but in general , its plot line has very minimum impingement on the show altogether .
